I work on a Saturday about once a month usually and I always find on those weekends, because I only have the Sunday off, I'm determined to make Sunday a great day. Today's no exception and we've started the day in the best possible way - with cinnamon toast for breakfast. It's more like cinnamon eggy bread really but it's absolutely delicious and this morning, Master Frugal decided he wanted to make it himself so I didn't even have to make it (although I did do the actual cooking). Cinnamon toast is one of those things that most people know how to make but rarely do so I'm going to … [Read more...]
How to make Sugar Mice….
If you've ever wondered how to make sugar mice then this is the post for you because I'm going to show you how to recreate these little cuties. Before I start though, I did want to show you a picture from the first time I shared a 'how to make sugar mice' post on this blog. ;-) For some reason, I thought it was OK to use orange food colouring in the absence of pink food colouring and then to make it even worse, I used red icing for the eyes. What do you think? They really are the stuff that nightmares are made from! They look horrific and I have no idea why, but I still … [Read more...]
How to separate an egg – the easy no-mess way….
I've always wondered how to separate an egg without making a mess as I usually end up getting my hands covered in egg when I try to do it and it often takes me more than one attempt to do it right! Not so long ago, someone at work told me what their secret was to separating eggs and at the time I remember that I just nodded my head and smiled whilst thinking to myself that their method would clearly never work. But then last night when we were making sugar mice we needed to separate an egg so I decided to give it a go and to my amazement, it actually worked so I enlisted Miss Frugal's … [Read more...]
Leftovers Inspiration – Five ways to use up leftover Risotto or Paella….
Homemade Paella and Oven baked risotto are two of my all time favourite meals but I always end up with leftovers so I've been experimenting with different ways to use up the leftovers.... These are really simple to make as all you need to do is make golf ball sized balls using the leftover paella / risotto. Then you just flatten them down and bake for around 20-25 minutes and you're done. The cakes make a great little starter with some spicy mayo on the side. I wrote about how to use up leftover risotto by making risotto balls here and the recipe works just as well with paella … [Read more...]
Rocky Road fridge cake….
Every now and again, I am required to make cakes for some random reason and naturally, the night that I am required to bake these cakes always seems to fall on a night where we have at least twenty seven other things planned which means my cakes invariably end up being the ones that are left at the end looking lonely on the table with a reduced to 10p sign on them. But this week, I had a revelation after finding two big bars of cooking chocolate at the back of my cupboard. I made rocky road cake which took Miss Frugal me less than 10 minutes and I don't want to brag but they were all sold … [Read more...]
Slow Cooker ham in Coca Cola….
Foods like lemon and honey, tomato and basil, Nutella and peanut butter are all perfect flavour combinations. I wouldn't have put ham and Coca Cola on my list of favourite food combinations at all - until last night when we had slow cooked Coca Cola ham. My version of coca cola ham is a much simplified version of the Nigella ham in coke recipe as it doesn't have any fancy stuff in it ;-) It really couldn't be easier to make and the results are delicious. I always bring my ham joint to the boil in a pan for five minutes to get rid of any excess salt but I know lots of people … [Read more...]
