My basic quiche recipe is one that I learned from my Mam years ago. I always used to look forward to her baking days because they were wonderfully predictable. There would almost always be a quiche, a corned beef pie and a cake chosen from her well-thumbed Be-Ro cookbook. I can still picture her standing in the kitchen with that cookbook open on the worktop, deciding which cake to make while the quiche and corned beef pie were already well underway. Looking back, I think those baking days are probably the reason I still love making simple, homemade food now. They're some of my happiest … [Read more...]
Five little things that have saved us money this week {3rd July 2026}….
Every week I share five small things we’ve done to save a bit of money, make life easier or help us spend more intentionally. None of them are usually huge on their own, but that’s kind of the point. Those small choices add up over time and give us more room for the things that really matter — whether that’s days out, holidays, home projects, treats we’ll actually enjoy or just a bit more breathing space in the budget. 1) Last weekend, we started the day sat in the garden, enjoying the sunshine before it got too hot for me. 🌞 Somehow, that turned into ripping out a half-dead … [Read more...]
Did you ever play the holiday lottery?
I’ve been looking at holidays this week and honestly, the amount of choice these days is overwhelming 😂 There are so many companies, an overwhelming number of hotels and different board options, and that's before you’ve even looked at flights. You can choose to add on pretty much anything nowadays too. Pool view, sea view, swim-up room, private terrace, adults only, family friendly, breakfast included, extra leg room on the plane… it’s endless. And it got me thinking about holidays years ago when booking a holiday was like playing the holiday lottery. 😁 You’d walk … [Read more...]
Are TV Wall Brackets Worth It? Here’s Our Ongoing Household Debate…
Every house seems to have one of those debates that never really gets settled. Ours, at the moment, is whether we should put a TV on the dining room wall. I'm firmly in the "absolutely not" camp as I love how relaxing that room is right now. We already have a wall-mounted TV in the living room and that's enough for me. I quite like having one room in the house where we actually sit and chat over tea without the temptation to have something on in the background. Austin, however, sees a perfectly good blank wall and immediately starts picturing another screen. 😂 It did get … [Read more...]
Lessons I learned when we moved house….
If you've ever been through the process of buying a new home, you'll know exactly what I mean when I say that there comes a point where you become convinced the whole thing is about to fall apart. We moved into our house earlier this year and, despite everything working out in the end, I lost count of the number of times I was sure something had gone wrong. One day we'd hear from the solicitor three times before lunchtime and then... nothing for days. We'd be waiting for one phone call, only to find out someone else was waiting for a completely different piece of paperwork before … [Read more...]
The best things about bringing a Victorian house back to life….
After writing about the worst things about living in a Victorian reno project last week, it only feels fair to give the house a chance to defend itself. 😁 Because yes, there is dust everywhere. Yes, every job turns into three other jobs. Yes, we have a plasterer on speed dial, and yes, I have had more conversations about door knobs, cladding lengths and paint finishes than I ever imagined possible. But underneath all of that, there is also a very big reason why we fell in love with this house in the first place. Living in a Victorian reno project is chaotic, expensive and … [Read more...]
