My freezer is full of supermarket bargains at the minute so we’re going to have a cheap week this week hopefully. I managed to get a ham joint reduced to £2.30 the other day so I’ve cooked that and what we didn’t use for tea was sliced up and made up into a few small portions that were put in separate sandwich bags and added to the freezer. I can use them for the wraps on Monday and the pizza on Wednesday. We also got some reduced chicken and cod as well which will do for Tuesday and Thursday night’s teas and I even got some cheap sausages for the casserole on Friday night.
I know I’m lucky in that I often pick Mr Frugal up from work (at a supermarket) on a night about 8 o clock so I’m at the shop around the time they do their last drastic reductions of the day but even so, you could easily find out what time your supermarket reduce their things on a night and time your visits to coincide with that. I think the reduce things to 25% on the morning, late afternoon/early evening they’ll do around 50% off and if anything’s still left on the night they do a final reduction later on which is when you can get things for silly prices.
Here’s my supermarket bargain menu plan for this week….
Monday – Make your own wrap tea, which always goes down well. I make my own homemade wraps and put bowls of sliced cucumber, sweetcorn, lettuce and tomatoes on the table along with some ham and cheese. Add some homemade potato wedges and some coleslaw and you’re done!
Tuesday – Homemade slow cooker chicken curry which we love. I’ve added the recipe below but it’s quite similar to my turkey and sweet potato curry recipe if you’ve ever tried that one.
Wednesday – Homemade pizza.
Thursday – Something fishy as we try to eat fish at least once a week. We’ll probably have homemade fishcakes and veg I think as that always goes down well.
Friday – Slow cooker sausage, bean and chorizo casserole.
Saturday – Slow cooker pulled pork sandwiches with curly fries and coleslaw.
Sunday – Slow cooker brisket with potatoes and veg.
Slow Cooker Chicken Curry
Ingredients
1 tin coconut milk
1 tin chopped tomatoes
1/2 onion chopped
4 tablespoons curry powder (more or less is fine)
500g chicken cut into smaller pieces.
This really is so easy that when we have this, Miss Frugal makes it for us!
- Add everything to your slow cooker.
- Give it a good stir.
- Set your slow cooker to low and leave it for 6-8 hours.
- Serve with rice and/or naan breads.

oooh that chicken curry recipe looks wonderfully simple. I've been trying to find some good slow cooker recipes to eat in this hot weather as my poor slow cooker is feeling somewhat neglected at the moment.

Some great slow cooker ideas – I love anything slow cooked! I have some chorizo sitting in the fridge so will give that casserole a go.
