We rely heavily on our broadband in our house, which probably isn’t a surprise considering our family is made up of a teen, a tween, a gamer and a blogger!
Before we had our current broadband installed we had major issues with the four of us being online at once (we had major issues with more than two people being online to be honest). So when we found out that our street was finally getting upgraded to super-fast broadband we were first in the queue to get it fitted.
Honestly, you can’t imagine the excitement in our house the day it finally came!
At the moment, there’s only one company who does super-fast broadband in our street so we have no choice with who we go with and the company we’re with knows that. Their customer service is non-existent and to be honest, the costs aren’t great.
As we’re stuck with just the one broadband provider where we live, we’ve managed to avoid the minefield of having to choose an internet service provider. But, because I’m a lovely helpful blogger, I’m going to help you navigate the right package for you and hopefully save you some money in the process.
I’ve written this blog post in partnership with Relish, a central London broadband company. It offers great alternatives to traditional internet service providers, including same –day delivery, no need for a landline so no waiting for installation and flexible contracts.
First things first, Mr. Frugal told me that there are four main things you need to consider when looking at broadband packages….
Obviously the better the speed, the better your broadband experience will be. But did you know that the speed is also an indication of how many people can be on your broadband at once? No, me neither. The faster the speed, the more people can use it at once in your house, so bigger the household – the more speed needed!
The more you use your broadband, or the more people you have in your house using it, the quicker you’ll eat up your data allowances – so you’ll need a generous usage limit if you’re a family like us. Ultimately unlimited broadband is the way forward, which is what Relish broadband offer. Essentially this means you can download films, stream videos and surf the net to your heart’s content. There’s no cap on your usage and no nasty charges if you use up more data than you’re meant to.
Another thing to consider is whether you need a landline and whether you could save money by not paying for line rental. In a house like ours we genuinely never use our home phone and I couldn’t tell you our phone number as we just use our mobiles. We’re stuck with paying for it though because we need it for our broadband package. Grrrrr! If you’re like us, why not opt for a package that doesn’t charge you for that landline you never use. Relish offers a simple broadband package where you just pay for internet, no line rental, no hidden charges, just £20 a month for unlimited broadband. That simple!
The last thing is the length of the contract – which is important because you’re not only stuck with the same provider for the duration of your contract, but you also have next to no negotiating capacity for a better deal during that time as they know they have you. So frustrating! If you don’t want to get locked in to an 18 or 24-month contract, look for an internet provider that offers short-term contacts, or even rolling contracts. One of the best points about Relish is that they offer both one month or 12 month contracts.
And I just thought it was about getting the cheapest package possible! No wonder he lets me handle the boring bills while he sorts the broadband out. 😉
So if you’re looking for a new broadband supplier then do consider the above four things and bear in mind that the comparison checkers will give you best prices, but it’s your job to dig a bit deeper and find the best deal for you and your family.
That’s why I’m a huge fan of Relish. As I mentioned above, there’s no complicated contracts – contracts start from one month for £20 with unlimited data. Then there’s the fact that if you order before 2pm on a weekday then you can get started the very same day (for a one off £20 delivery fee) or the next working day if you’d rather not pay extra.
If you’re impressed so far then wait till you hear the next part – there are no messy installations and no having to make cups of tea for engineers because there are no engineers! You do it yourself which might sound scary but actually takes just minutes and I’ve been told even I could do it! You literally plug it in, and you’re off!
But how does it rate against Mr. Frugal’s four essential points?
Relish offers speeds up to 40mbps – which is pretty awesome
Unlimited. What else is there to say! Stream and download to your heart’s content
No landline needed! And no unnecessary, expensive television package which frankly you just don’t use (hello Netflix!)
Contracts start from one month, so if you’re not looking for a long-term commitment you’re in luck
So not only is it a great price, quick delivery and easy plug and play installation, it also ticks every single one of Mr. Frugal’s essentials.
