I love taking photos but I'm far from being any good at it and even though I have a brilliant DSLR camera, I have no idea how to use it outside of the manual mode which is such a shame as it's capable of taking much better photos than I currently take with it!I've lost count of the number of times that I say I'm going to learn to take better photos and then done nothing about it and the fact that I feel like my photos aren't as good as they could be has taken the shine off using my camera a little bit for me - so much so that I can't even remember the last time I used it.I've been … [Read more...]

Learning to let go….
As a parent, I like to think I have quite a relaxed style of parenting but no matter how laid back I am, I wasn't prepared for the question Master Frugal asked me last weekend: Please can I go to the park with my friends today Mam? My immediate thought was absolutely not - he's only 10 and the park is about three quarters of a mile away. I quickly thought out all of the worst case scenarios in my head which ranged anywhere from him being kidnapped to falling in the lake and from falling of a swing to being bitten by a rabid dog.(Not that I'm a worrier you understand ;-))I opened my … [Read more...]
Supporting your children’s learning….
I genuinely believe that a school can only do so much to teach our children - the rest of it is up to us, as parents. We have the opportunity to take what our children are learning at school and run with it - making it as interesting as possible for them at the same time. For example, at the moment Master Frugal is learning about the First World War and he is enjoying it more than any topic he has covered before at school. He loves to tell us about what he's learned that day and has lots of random facts about the war stored in his head already. While he is at that stage and is … [Read more...]
Encouraging learning through the Summer Holidays….
Miss Frugal's new school have set her homework to complete throughout the Summer Holidays and whilst I don't agree with the volume of homework she's been given, I do agree with the principal of continuing to encourage learning through the holidays - albeit in a much less formal and structured way than they learn at school.Encouraging Reading There are so many ways to encourage reading but my big thing about reading is making sure that I don't make them read when they don't want to because I want to encourage them to love to read rather than just reading because they're told do! Saying … [Read more...]
Teaching children the value of money – Learning through play….
It's been a while since I've written one of these posts isn't it?I really do believe that it's never to early to start teaching children the value of money and I strongly feel that it should be a subject covered in the National Curriculum both at primary and secondary level. But as much as I'm sure that most teachers try to cover this, it's not currently covered as a stand alone subject so it's our job as parents to make sure we help our children learn about finance and the impacts it can have on their life when their older. That's why I started writing these … [Read more...]
Learning about Consequences….
I was discussing Miss Frugal the other day with someone much wiser than me last week and they said something to me that I thought was very true and something I hadn't really thought about before: Part of growing up is learning that some of the decisions you make will be wrong. I filed that little quote in the 'useful parenting advice' section of my brain until we had a situation yesterday where it was appropriate.... Those of you who've been around for a while will know that Miss Frugal can't eat any form of processed meat as it causes quite bad abdominal migraines at worst and at best, … [Read more...]
