Every week I share five small things we’ve done to save a bit of money, make life easier or help us spend more intentionally.
None of them are usually huge on their own, but that’s kind of the point. Those small choices add up over time and give us more room for the things that really matter — whether that’s days out, holidays, home projects, treats we’ll actually enjoy or just a bit more breathing space in the budget.
I mean, what a week we’ve had!
I think I can safely say we saved money this week without even thinking about it as it was too hot to venture too far from home for most of the week. We pottered about in the garden most evenings other than on the hottest day when it was just too hot and we actually went out in the car to use the air con to cool us down.
We did drive to the town near us where fuel was 9p cheaper per litre and filled up our big car’s tank but I’m not counting that as something that saved us money as we’ll have spent the savings driving over there specifically for that. And to make it worse from a money saving perspective, while we were there I bought some trousers from TKMaxx for £22. 😁
I’m not mad about it though as we stayed cool, had a lovely drive, bought some bargain fuel and I got some lovely trousers that I’ll wear loads so it might have been a money saving fail but it was a definite win in reality.
1) First it was radishes and now we have sugar snap peas!

Does this mean I am officially a gardener? I have six radishes and five sugar snap peas so I’m going to claim the title. 😂
I’m not actually sure that this one saves money in real terms though as I have planted them, watered them, bought them a little frame to cling to and spent time wrapping them around the frame – all for the sake of five sugar snap peas! I know I’ll get more as the Summer goes on but it feels like a lot of effort for not much return.
A pack from Asda costs £1.24 and you get an awful lot more than my five but I’m 99% sure mine taste better and there’s so much more satisfaction eating something home grown rather than shop bought. So, I’m taking it as a win.
2) Our landing is ridiculously long – I don’t actually know how long it is but I’ve just taken long strides from one end to another and I got ten in. Now I have fairly little legs so that’s not ten normal long strides but it gives you an idea of how long it is.
We want the long wall to be a bit of a gallery wall filled with pictures of places we’ve been together and loved – just places, no people – and the five we have up so far make me smile when I walk past and one catches my eye.
These are the five that came from our old house but we were talking last week and thought it would be nice to add a couple of more recent photos to the wall. We don’t even have one up from Iceland yet and that was back in October.

So, I found two black frames – identical as I like a bit of symmetry on this wall to make up for the chaos of the photo wall I mentioned in last week’s post – for the grand total of £1 and ordered some cheap prints on line for a couple of pounds. As soon as they arrive, our photo wall will be extended by two photos.
We toyed with loads of ideas for that wall as it’s a big space that needed something and we wanted it to be really intentional rather than just filled with random art and this way, we can add to it gradually and every picture on there means something.
It helps that it doesn’t cost much when we want to add to it too. 😁
3) This week I redeemed £5 from my Airtime Rewards balance which has come straight off my phone bill.

Airtime Rewards is an app where you get cashback with certain retailers just by using your card with them and you can then use your earnings to pay your mobile phone bill. I’ve shared how it works before but basically, it’s a one-time set up which takes about five minutes and then it just ticks away in the background so it’s literally money for nothing.
It’s not a huge amount but it all adds up and considering I haven’t done anything other than use my normal card for my usual shopping, I’ll happily take it.
4) As a diabetic, I sometimes struggle a bit with breakfast as I’m not supposed to eat too much of most breakfasty foods you would usually eat.
I like yoghurt and fruit but even fruit needs to be limited so if I buy a pack of six nectarines for example, they’d go off before I got through the six as there’s only me who likes them. On the flip side, if I buy cherries then they are gone in no time as everyone loves them. 🙂

So this week, I’ve bought some frozen fruit bags as they were 3 for 2 at Sainsburys – peaches and nectarines, cherries and blueberries. I also bought some strawberries from the fresh produce section and tomorrow’s job is to split them into small breakfast sized portions ready to get out first thing ready for my breakfast which I normally have around half nine time when I work from home.
It means that for about £8, I have about 10 portions of tasty fruit in the freezer ready for my yoghurts on a morning. 🍒
5) Instead of a cheeky Summer pedicure this year, I thought I’d give the home version a go so I bought a foot mask from Amazon for £2.75 and sat for an hour with my feet in the most ridiculous looking plastic socks.

I nearly killed myself when the postman knocked at the door and I attempted to run downstairs with them on but after managing to survive the hour, I was actually pleasantly surprised when I took them off and my feet were soft and almost sandal ready. A bit of red nail polish and I was ready for the sun.
The only problem was that the sun was so hot that I didn’t go too far for fear of melting. ☀
