Let’s get this straight first – I really do not like spiders!
But as much as I hate them, I object to turning on my TV on a Sunday night to see one being eaten alive for entertainment purposes. I didn’t find it entertaining in the slightest!
Surely an animal is an animal and whilst I admit a spider is not in the same league as a lion, the circumstances are very similar in my eyes. In fact, I’m really not sure how this is different other than the fact that the animal in question is much smaller and yes, a little bit creepy.
Both creatures were pointlessly killed for entertainment purposes.
We were all horrified when poor Cecil the Lion was killed for sport, in fact there was international outrage wasn’t there? So why is it OK for ITV to do this without any recriminations.
Where do we draw the line?
Is there a list of animals we can be cruel to and a list that we can’t?
I’m not vegetarian and I don’t want this to come across as hypocritical because I eat meat, I just think that ITV crossed the line last night in the name of entertainment.
What do you think?

As much as I hate spiders I couldn't bear to watch this – it was a really new low for the show, and I can't believe it was allowed 🙁 Kaz x
I don't think it is ever okay to be cruel to animal, big or small, ugly or cute! I am not an animal lover either but I do not find that an excuse for abusing them.xx
I totally agree. I am vegetarian and would not kill anything, I just think there's no need. I felt physically sick watching the spider be killed in this way for absolutely no reason.
I don't watch the show but I was angry when I heard about this. No creature deserves such a horrid end to its life.
Not sure what show that is, but I certainly wouldn't watch and I wouldn't think too highly of people who thought it was entertaining. I am a meat eater, but I buy my meat from the local butcher and take care to buy free range eggs and the like.
i agree totally disgusting but i do think to eat any animal is to be honest and that they arent ever killed in a nice way or a right way and that we really dont need to kill them for opur pleasure. (but absolutely not for our entertainment)
I have to admit that I don't watch it but many animals are eaten alive every day, some for survival purposes and some for fun. It's gross but we eat meat all the time
I have never seen the show and I certainly will not be watching now
Oh gosh I don't think I could watch that – I don't get why they want to make people eat live creatures!
I totally agree with you. I eat meat and I enjoy it BUT I want the animal looked after and slaughtered as humanely as possible. I want it stunned first as well. I got thinking about animals that are used for fun. Bull fighting, fox hunting, hare coursing, dog fighting, cock fighting, pheasant shooting. All for a good day out. Yes, I know you can eat pheasant but really? It's a tiny bird full of bones. I don't watch the show anyway, I would rather stick hot needles in my eyes. Humans are pretty awful sometimes in their "fun" activities.
Eew- was it a live spider? That's awful. I never watch that show, it's not my cup of tea. But animal cruelty is not OK – what next, dog fighting on TV for ratings?
The show isn't one I watch for many reasons – but I do agree all animals should be treated with the same respect. If I was a viewer of the show I certainly wouldn't be now after that.
