I’ve just read on the MoneySavingExpert website that if you are required to wear a uniform (even just a t-shirt) for work and you wash, repair or replace it yourself, then you could be eligible to reclaim tax you have paid and although it doesn’t add up to too much per year, I believe that you can apply for repayment for the past four years which will get you a nice little repayment that could come in handy. It’s worth looking into if you can say yes to the following:
- You wear a uniform that shows you’ve got a certain job, like a branded t-shirt or a full uniform.
- You are required to wear the clothing when you are doing your job.
- You are responsible for paying to clean, repair or replace your uniform.
- You must have paid income tax in the year you are going to claiming.
I won’t go into the full details of how much you are entitled to or how to go about reclaiming as it’s all there on the MSE site but it looks like a really easy process (a brief letter) and you could get a little money back as well as potentially reducing your tax for future years.
Good Luck.

Does this apply to all work wear? I buy suits for work that I never wear anywhere else so is that considered uniform? Also, some people where I work are provided with a uniform, but I have to buy my own clothes, how can they get tax relief on laundering their uniform when I have to pay to dry clean my suits? Sounds quite unfair to me! Then again, it is the tax office.
I think it has to be an actual uniform but I completely agree with you – I buy clothes just for work but don't get anything.
