I usually like to while away my Thursday mornings lazing on the settee watching daytime TV as it’s my one morning of me time. It’s my day off work, the kids are at school and Mr Frugal is in be recovering from his nightshift so I make the most of this time by doing absolutely nothing.
This morning, I was only half paying attention to Market Kitchen on the TV while trying to catch up on everyone’s fab blog posts from the last couple of days when I heard Andi Peters (of childrens tele fame) saying that he could help me to save a fortune on my food shopping. Well, that got my full attention and I was quite impressed with what he said.
The savings can be had by shopping on line at companies like Approved Food who specialise in food that has passed it’s ‘Best Before’ date or products that have a short shelf life. They also sell lines that have been discontinued and products in older packaging.
According to Andi Peters (so it must be true lol) the difference between ‘Use by’ and ‘Best Before’ is that any products with a ‘Best Before’ date can still be consumed safely after the date shown but they may not have be at their best, hence ‘Best Before’. Products that are labelled with a ‘Use By’ date should not be used after this date as they could make you ill.
I have heard about this before ages ago but I didn’t realise how much you could save – I might put an order in, although I’ll have to keep it secret as Mr Frugal is extremely particular about his dates (quite anal actually lol).
It can be our secret!

VKT – I've always been a bit like that aswell 😉
Resewn Sally, Knit happend and Disco Goth – It's good to know that people have already used them, I am def considering putting an order in.
I noticed the postage costs as well Single mum – maybes I'll just buy more so I get my moneys worth lol
Mr Frugal is so irritating that when he works nights he won't take something that goes out of date that night as he doesn't have his dinner till one o clock and by then it would be an hour out of date!!! Glad your DH is Dear Husband again lol
Definitely put in an order, they are fantastic, they even add up your savings as you put things in your basket. The downside – say goodbye to any spare space in your house!
I was looking at them the other day, was wondering if after adding the postage costs on if it actually reduces your shopping bill though? (Mind you with some of the bargains on that site I would say it probably does!)
Ohhh thanks for the tip, I too will check it out, but like Mr Frugal, DH (dear husband today, last night DH was Dick Head but since he voluntarily came into the kitchen and apologised for having a go he is definitely back in my good books!). Anyhow DH is incredibly anal about best before and use by dates. Truth be known, best before dates I just glance at, if it looks, and smells ok I still use it, maybe not shell fish though. If DH knew the poor man would starve!
I have shopped with approved food before, great bargains to be had 🙂
I have used Approved food quite a few times, never had any problems with them, it takes a while to get the delivery here as I'm in north Scotland but it's worth the wait. it's like xmas time in my house every time we get a delivery! lol.
Wow….I am so glad to know what the difference is. I have been tossing both labels. This will definitely save me some money.
