I’ve been doing a bit of research this week about the extra things I should be including in our moving house budget and there’s things I’ve read about that I genuinely wouldn’t have even thought of if it wasn’t for Google! I’m going to share a few of them with you today in the next of my ‘Moving House’ series of posts…

Moving house always costs more than you expect. Even when you budget carefully, there are often extra expenses that creep in along the way. Knowing what to watch out for means you can prepare in advance and avoid blowing your budget.
Here are some of the most common hidden moving costs to keep on your radar.
1. Cleaning Fees
If you’re renting, landlords often expect a professional clean before you leave. Even in your new home, you may want to pay for a deep clean before moving in, especially if it hasn’t been done recently.
2. Storage Costs
Sometimes moving dates don’t line up and you may need to store belongings for a few days or weeks. Storage fees can add up quickly if you’re not prepared.
3. Extra Packing Supplies 📦
You might think you’ve got enough boxes, tape, and bubble wrap, but often you’ll need more than planned. Buying extras at the last minute can cost more.
4. Childcare or Pet Care
On moving day it can be tricky to juggle kids or pets with heavy lifting and boxes. Paying for childcare or kennels, even just for a day, is an extra cost many people forget.
5. Takeaways and Quick Meals 🍕
When your kitchen is packed away, it’s tempting to order takeaways. A few days of this can easily add up to £50 or more.
6. Utility Crossover Charges
Watch out for final bills from your old home and set-up fees at your new one. Some providers charge exit fees, connection costs, or deposits.
7. Replacement of Everyday Items
Cleaning products, lightbulbs, batteries, and even basic groceries often need to be bought again after a move. It’s surprising how quickly these small costs add up.
8. Lost or Broken Items
Even with careful packing, accidents happen. Replacing broken items or things that go missing in the move can hit your budget.
9. Redirection of Post
Royal Mail’s redirection service is handy but not free. It’s worth factoring this in if you don’t want to risk missing important letters.
10. First Week Extras 🏡
New bins, curtains, or even a shower curtain are often forgotten until you’re in the new place. Keeping a small budget aside for these first-week essentials will save stress.
Moving house is stressful enough without surprise costs. By planning for these hidden expenses, you’ll feel more in control and keep your move as affordable as possible. 😀
