Today is all about how this amazing homemade lip scrub can give you super smooth lips without the usual price tag!

We’ve all heard about the benefits of exfoliating our body and face, haven’t we? But our lips are one of those areas we tend to forget about completely. A gentle lip scrub can make such a difference though. It removes the dead, dry skin sitting on the surface and leaves your lips feeling soft and smooth again.
And as if that wasn’t enough, smooth lips make your lipsticks, liners and glosses last so much longer because they adhere to a soft surface rather than catching on dry patches. Even a simple lip balm looks and feels nicer after a quick exfoliation.
Aaaaand if you’re still not convinced, here’s the good part… exfoliating your lips helps them hold onto moisture for longer. By getting rid of the dry skin first, your lip balm can actually sink in properly instead of just sitting on top. It’s such a tiny step, but it really does help prevent cracked, sore lips — especially in winter. 😊
So now you’re hopefully sold on the idea of using a lip scrub, you’re probably wondering where to get one from. You could pop to Lush and spend £5.50 on a teeny tiny tub… or you could do what Miss Frugal does and make your own at home in a couple of minutes.
It’s cheaper, fresher, customisable and honestly much more fun.

Here’s the tiny-batch recipe we use — just enough to fill one small lip-balm pot.
We bought a pack of eight little pots (like these on Amazon) as we do crafts like this quite often but you can buy them super cheap in Primark usually in their travel section.
What you’ll need
• 1 teaspoon white sugar
• 1 teaspoon brown sugar
• About ½ teaspoon coconut oil
• Optional: 1–2 drops of food colouring
• Optional: a tiny drop of flavouring (vanilla, peppermint, strawberry… anything you fancy)
(Ignore the olive oil as we decided not to use any in the end)
How to make it
Add the white sugar and brown sugar to a small bowl and mix them together. Stir in the coconut oil until it forms a paste — you want it soft enough to spread, but not oily. If your kitchen is cold and the coconut oil is firm, you might need to mash it a little to get it moving.
Once your base is mixed, you can customise it. Add one drop of food colouring if you want a hint of colour, and a tiny splash of flavouring if you want something that tastes nicer than plain sugar. Go very light with both — a little goes a long way.
Spoon the mixture into a little pot and you’re done. It keeps for a couple of weeks, but to be honest, mine never lasts that long because I use it so much.

To use it, just rub a small amount gently over your lips and wipe away with a warm cloth. Your lips feel so soft afterwards and your lip products go on like a dream.
It’s such a simple DIY, perfect for winter, brilliant as a stocking filler and ideal for anyone who loves a little pamper moment. If you want to try different flavours, colours or bigger batches, just shout — I can help with those too. 😊
It really is amazing and leaves your lips feeling soft and smooth! Considering the large tub of coconut oil cost just £6, I think that our homemade lip scrub costs about 35p to make which is massively cheaper than the £5.50 it sells at in Lush and ours is so much yummier!
She also makes a gorgeous version with peppermint essence and another with cinnamon that she loves but I’m not keen on myself!
If you think you’ve seen this post before, you absolutely might have. This week’s posts are a little bit special because my very lovely daughter, Miss Frugal, has stepped in to help while I’m feeling a bit under the weather. She’s chosen some of her favourite old posts to share with you again – the ones that bring back happy memories of things we’ve made, done or visited together, and I honestly can’t wait to see what she’s picked. One of the conditions of her takeover was that she was allowed to do it all herself, so I’ve written this little intro for her to add to each post she chooses. I’ll be finding out what she’s re-sharing at the same time as you do. The control freak in me is very uncomfortable with this. 🫢
I’d love you follow me on Twitter and it would be amazing to see you over on my Facebook page and on Instagram. If you’re interested, you can find out more about me here and while I’ve got your attention, if you’re wondering why some of my posts lately are a little bit less frugal then have a read of this post. 😉
