As much as I don't like the ever increasing commercialism of Valentines Day, I do actually like the day itself and the idea behind it. We never spend a fortune on gifts and we don't bother with cards but we do buy small gifts for each other and I always buy the kids something silly too!Around this time over the last few years I've written about how to be a cheap date and how to keep your romance alive on a budget and I've also shared my top 50 frugal date ideas with you but this year, I thought I'd share something different with you. This year, I want to focus on ways to love yourself … [Read more...]

Is saving money one of your New Years Resolutions?
Every year when I write my New Years Resolution list, the same one is always right there at the top of my list - SAVE MONEY. Actually, trying to save money is always a high priority here but making it a New Years Resolution always seems to focus me on it even more than usual. As I know lots of you will be trying to focus on the same things as me I thought I'd do a quick reminder of my Money Makeover series from last year which was all about reviewing your finances and making them better....Week One – Money Makeover Introduction Week Two – Sort our your spending Week Three – Dealing … [Read more...]
Perfect Presents for Dads….
I just realised that I wrote a gift guide for tween and teen girls (based on Miss Frugal) and one for boys aged 9 ish (based on Master Frugal) but I haven't done anything for Dads.Dads are the hardest people to buy for if you ask me - my Dad gets a bottle of port and a big slab of blue stilton every year without fail as that's all he wants and as boring as it may be, at least I know he'll enjoy it.Mr Frugal isn't as easy to buy for though - he doesn't like experience days or things like that, he's not big on clothes (unless it's a football shirt), he likes his music but usually buys … [Read more...]
The hardest decision of my life….
A little over a year ago, I was faced with the hardest parenting decision that I've had to make. The decision that I had to make was which secondary school to apply to for Miss Frugal. There were two choices really – the Academy less than five minutes walk from our house with the not so great Ofsted report or the school that’s further away with the excellent Ofsted report. On paper, it looked like an easy decision but in reality, it was so much harder. I had to take into account that there wasn't a single one of her classmates that would be going to the school further away so … [Read more...]
The budget version of Elf on a Shelf….
I know it's a bit early for Elf on a Shelf but lots of people have started following my Elf on a Shelf Pinterest board over the last week so I figured people might be starting to plan their elf activities a little earlier this year!I love the idea of Elf on a Shelf at Christmas (although last year a few people did get a bit too elf obsessed ;-)) but I absolutely don't love the idea of paying £25+ for a doll that looks more than a little scary and would more than likely give me nightmares and a book that explains what Elf on a Shelf is all about. This is what the original Elf on a Shelf … [Read more...]
Win a beautiful blossom tree in time for Christmas….
It's not too soon to write about Christmas when both the John Lewis and the Coca Cola adverts have been on TV is it?I hope not anyway because I have a great competition for you today to win a beautiful blossom tree from Christmas Tree World.A blossom tree is a lovely alternative to a traditional Christmas tree although it appears that a blossom tree is not just suitable for Christmas as I have Miss Frugal looking over my shoulder right now asking if she can have one for her bedroom all year round! All you need to do to get your hands on a five foot blossom tree of your own is tell … [Read more...]
