Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Morpeth is described on the English Heritage website as somewhere that you can lose yourself and when we were struggling to decide where to go for the day last weekend using our English Heritage membership, it was this description that swung it for us: ....with its unique combination of Grecian architecture, medieval ruins, formal terraces and lush jungle-esque Quarry Garden. Soak up the sights and smells of our Grade 1 listed gardens, roam the fabulous pillars in the grand hall, and enjoy wonderful views from the top of the castle tower. Belsay Hall was … [Read more...]
Five Frugal things I’ve done this week to save money {5th September 2015}….
Five frugal things I've done this week: 1. I know I've already mentioned this in my post about our visit to Mount Grace Priory last week but we've got ourselves an annual family membership to English Heritage which means we can get into over 400 sites across the UK without having to pay anything other than our monthly Direct Debit which will be less than £8. We've already had two great days out which would have cost around £50 if we had paid entry so in one week we've already got some great use out of it!2. Remember the fruit and veg that we bought when we got lost last … [Read more...]
Do you know what the safe storage times for food in your fridge & freezer are?
Your fridge and freezer are your greatest weapons in the battle to save money by meal planning (see how I've tried to make the subject a little more exciting there?) and if you know how long you can keep food in there safely then you're half way to winning!I made you a handy little guide to show how long food will keep (based on info on the .gov.uk site) although I understand that the freezer timescales are more based on quality rather than safety as the quality of frozen food will start to diminish after a while. Are you still awake?I know this wasn't the most exciting post … [Read more...]
Dear So and So: The one with the whistle blowing….
(This post was written last week when we were at Butlins last week - I'm feeling a lot calmer now ;-))Dear Parents Everywhere,As I write this post, I’m sat on a settee in our apartment at Butlins relaxing while the kids have gone to play in the pool for a few hours with Mr Frugal.Swimming isn’t really my thing so I opted to stay in the apartment with the idea of a lovely relax on the settee. I pictured myself sat with the patio doors open letting the cool breeze in while I read my Kindle and ate my way through the pack of chocolate chip cookies that I keep hidden in the … [Read more...]
20 more ridiculously easy ways to shave pounds off your budget….
OK, I absolutely have to mention this one although I considered leaving it out because I go on about it all the time but I can't write a post about how to reduce your outgoings without mentioning it! Mealplanning is THE best way to save money because by being organised and planning what you're going to eat in the week ahead, you can write a shopping list that covers everything you need for the week ahead and you'll cut down on food waste as well as last minute trips to the shop.Plan your meals based on the food you already have in so you need to buy even less.A well stocked store … [Read more...]
Never lose a document again with my super easy filing system….
We've all been there at least once - a lost passport a few days before you're due to travel, a lost bank statement when you need to prove you bought something or even a misplaced driving license just when you need it.For me, it was a lost passport just weeks before we were due to travel on holiday and despite turning the house upside down and back to front we couldn't find it anywhere which led to a stressful last minute (and very costly) visit to our local passport office for a replacement. The stress that lost passport caused was unbelievable so as soon as I got back from our holiday, … [Read more...]
