1. You're going to laugh at me for my first frugal act of the week this week! Years ago, Mr Frugal and I used to buy each other expensive cards for Christmas and because I'm a hoarder I always used to save them. Anyway, one year I got them all out and noticed a theme - they all said something like 'To the one I love' or To Someone Special', they all had a cute picture on the front and they all had practically the same message written inside. Oh yeah, and they all cost a small fortune! So that year, we decided not to send each other a card but to simply swap cards from … [Read more...]
Homemade teacher’s gifts that will save you money but still look amazing….
Do you make homemade teacher's gifts at Christmas or do you buy your children's teachers gifts?I know lots don't but I always like to give them a gift to show my appreciation because I imagine that being a teacher is one of the hardest jobs there is, especially these days with all of the paperwork and the expectations on them to achieve great results. I often buy the gifts but this year we're planning to make our own homemade teacher's gifts as Master Frugal has five teachers and teaching assistants that he wants to get something for and I suspect if we didn't make them, I'd end up … [Read more...]
Get a free personalised video message from Santa….
Since the children were younger, one of my favourite moments each Christmas has always been watching their faces light up when I told them that Santa had sent them a video message just for them. They used to sit in front of my laptop and watch as I opened the message that Santa had emailed me for them. They used to watch with wonder in their eyes as Santa lets them know that he's been keeping eye on them all year. They used to gasp with amazement as Santa congratulates them on some of their achievements throughout the year. They even used to look a little sheepish as Santa … [Read more...]
I’ve been getting my Christmas craft on….
This is an advertorial and I received a fee to create a Christmas craft idea for https://www.tescoliving.com/making-and-doingIt's not very often that I get a chance to get crafty these days now that the kids have decided that they're too old for crafting so when the rather lovely people from Tesco Living asked me if I wanted to join in with their 25 days of handmade Christmas crafting by having a go at putting a new spin on their idea of making paper trees I dusted off my craft box and put my thinking cap on!I wasn't sure what my twist would be until we unpacked our Christmas … [Read more...]
Is animal cruelty ever OK?
Let's get this straight first - I really do not like spiders! But as much as I hate them, I object to turning on my TV on a Sunday night to see one being eaten alive for entertainment purposes. I didn't find it entertaining in the slightest!Surely an animal is an animal and whilst I admit a spider is not in the same league as a lion, the circumstances are very similar in my eyes. In fact, I'm really not sure how this is different other than the fact that the animal in question is much smaller and yes, a little bit creepy. Both creatures were pointlessly killed for entertainment … [Read more...]
A quick decorating refresh before Christmas….
Every January I make at least one New Year's Resolution that involves the house and last year was no exception. I promised myself that I would get the hall, stairs and landing painted (not an easy job with such a high ceiling) and that I would do the downstairs bathroom out as we've never bothered since we moved in really.Fast forward, 11 and a half months and here I am sat here wondering where the time has gone with the same grubby hallway and the same boring bathroom. Both rooms are painted in the same boring magnolia paint that the builder used when they first decorated the house and … [Read more...]
