Hands up who's struggling this month? No matter how organised we were for Christmas, we're still finding it difficult to make December's early pay stretch for the five and a half weeks till January's pay day. We've had some unexpected things to pay out (car battery, school trip deposit and musical instruments) which has made things even more difficult so I need to keep even closer control than usual over our food budget this month.I managed to get a big bag of minced steak mince from Tesco just before closing yesterday reduced to just £2.64 so you can guess what's going to feature very … [Read more...]

The first meal plan of the year….
Meal planning is hard enough over Christmas but add to that illness and a complete lack of energy to even write a meal plan, let along stick to it and you end up with a complete meal planning failure! So, now that we're on the mend (mostly) and the kids are back at school, it's time to get back on track and try and spend even less than usual to make up for the last few weeks. As well as trying to be super-frugal and only use things that are in, I'm going to try and cook a new meal at least once a fortnight (once a week seems like too much hard work at the minute) so I *may* attempt pulled … [Read more...]
The year ahead….
2012 was a great year for us as a family and I hope that 2013 will be even better.Everyone has their own reasons for living frugally and I know I've said this before (lots of times) but one of our reasons is so that we can afford to do more fun things as a family. This year we've had some great times together and made some fantastic family memories with some lovely friends - old and new.I'll be sad to see the end to such a great year but as always, I'm looking forward to the start of the new year. I love the feeling that the new year brings and I always like to spend a little bit of … [Read more...]

I have some chicken pieces in the freezer so I might try some homemade chicken nuggets with … [Read more...]
Frugal alternatives to Christmas cards….
What sort of person are you when it comes to Christmas cards? Do you...a) love writing out Christmas cards.b) make your own Christmas cards and take great pleasure in giving them out to your nearest and dearest.c) only give Christmas because you feel like it's expected but hate having to sit down and write them out.d) just not bother with them at all.I'm a definite C with my Christmas cards although I'm very jealous of all you A, B and D's ;-)Over the last few years though, I've found a few ways to reduce the number of cards I write our by lots (without making me look … [Read more...]
Family Friendly Frugal Meals – filled giant Yorkshire puddings….
Another busy week this week - we have something planned for every night and I'm shattered just thinking about it! Meals are going to have to even quicker and easier so we can fit them in ;-)Monday - Filled Yorkshire puddings (see below).Tuesday - I'm out for tea with my friends for work as someone's leaving this week and seeing as Mr Frugal's at work, I'll be taking the kids with me. I'll feed them a quick tea of fish fingers, chips and peas before we go and let them have the pick of the desert menu while we eat I think as there's nothing on the menu that they'll go for.Wednesday … [Read more...]
