It’s that time of year when I share my No Trick or Treating sign… 🎃
There’s a couple of extra versions this year too because last year, a couple of you asked for one that said that all the treats were gone.
Also, you’ll notice that the wording is out of date in the post, I didn’t want to update it from when I first published this post eight years ago. It makes me smile to read it so I’m leaving it as it is other than adding in a couple of new versions.

Personally, I love Halloween and look forward to the knocks on the door on Halloween night from the little ones all dressed up in their Halloween costumes and these days, Master Frugal (who tells me he is way too old to go trick or treating) likes to get dressed up and be our designated door answerer. Miss Frugal prefers the role of dog cuddler as poor Buddy doesn’t know what to do with himself with so many children coming to the door.
We haven’t always been a fan of Halloween though and there have been years when we’ve turned the lights out and pretended not to be home in the hope that trick or treaters won’t knock on our door. We used to do this when the kids were younger and in bed when the Halloweeners came knocking and did it again a few years ago when we were all ill with a tummy bug and in no state to be getting up and down to answer the door – we looked scarier than the trick or treaters that year I suspect.
There’s lots of other reasons why people wouldn’t want to answer the door so for that reason, when we used to take the kids trick or treating, we would only knock on the doors or people who had been pre-warned that we were coming (friends and family who were OK with this) and houses where we could see a pumpkin or other decorations.
Lots of people didn’t do the same as us though and would knock on every single door they passed, sometimes more than once and usually quite loudly which I imagine was pretty annoying for people who were in but not wanting to answer the door to the trick or treaters.
One of my neighbours popped in for a cuppa the other day and she mentioned that she was dreading Halloween as she has a baby who is easily woken. Being the good neighbour that I am (:-)) I said I could make here a little No Trick or Treating sign for her door to let people know not to knock and I think it turned out quite well so I thought I’d share it here too in case any of you would prefer not to have trick or treaters calling this Halloween.
This is the new version I’ve added for this year:

And here’s the original poster that I made…

Just click on the image you want to go to the full-size version for printing in A4 size.
I’m sure you’ll still get some persistent knockers but this No Trick or Treating sign should definitely cut down on the numbers you get.

great idea!
This is great for any houses that dont want trick or treaters. Where we are as soon as the lights are off it means that the doors will not be answered
That looks like a great idea, we love Halloween but I know my in-laws don't like it at all!

This is a great idea for anyone who does not want trick or treaters and so kind of you to make this for your neighbour. I know I dreaded Halloween when our kids were babies.
What a good idea Cass. I know many people find it really scary. As we now live in a Christian community, it is a bit of a nonstarter for us now. Mich x
