Aaagh I really can’t believe what Miss Frugal has just said to me. We just popped to the shop and she announced that she didn’t want any sweets as she was on a diet! She’s 7!!!!! I was a bit shocked to say the least so we came and dropped the shopping off and went for a nice walk – just the two of us. We had a good talk and it turns out that she doesn’t think that she’s fat or that she needs to lose weight, she’s just learning a lot about healthy eating at school and she wants to eat more healthily at home.
Don’t get me wrong, we do eat quite healthily (well, the kids do anyway) and we always have a full fruit bowl for the kids to snack on but she wants to learn to cook more healthy foods for her tea. She has packed lunches for dinner and they’re always really healthy – they have to be as the new head teacher is healthy eating obsessed (not a bad thing really but when I say obsessed, I really mean obsessed). Tea is another matter really and I really could do better here, I think the problem is that Master Frugal is such a fussy eater that we tend to stick to foods that we know he’ll eat and I guess they’re not as healthy as they could be so from next week I am going to start cooking more healthy foods – We’ll have a good look through our recipe books tomorrow and I’ll let you know what we come up with.
I know I’m a bit biased but she’s beautiful and certainly doesn’t need to go on a diet.
UPDATE – I’m pretty sure I got through to her seeing as she’s just asked her daddy for a piece of chocolate. She’s just explained to him that “it’s OK to eat any food as long as you don’t eat too much of it and make yourself sick” She’s also taken one of my Annabel Karmel cookbooks to bed for ideas on what she’s going to cook for tea tomorrow.

Booyah, interesting post. I am interested in posts like this.
I so like your blog. Great content. Please keep posting such awesome cotent.
I know exactly what you mean – the school seem to be giving out some very
strong messages about Healthy Eating. The healthiest eaters even get to
sit on the 'restaurant table' and get their names in the weekly newsletter….
I think she's OK now but you can see that she's more concious about what
we're eating and she must be one of the only children around who won't eat
chips!

You are right, she is beautiful and clearly doesn't need to diet. My daughter suddenly annonced she couldn't eat crisps or chocolate after learning about healthy eating at school, exactly like your daughter. It annoyed me that the school had given out the very strong message that such foods should not be eaten when there clearly is a place for them in their diet, in moderation of course. In the end I had to convince my daughter is was fine to eat them and I was allowing her too. She does eat a little more fruit now but I seem to have reversed the potential damage. Hope your daughter is okay.
Oh bless her. I'm so glad I dont have a girl. I would be scared of them saying things like that and me putting my body issues onto them. Its one thing learning about healthy eating but I do think in schools the word diet should be banned completely!
Its great shes taking an interest though and wants to learn to cook healthier meals which is great. Maybe it will help Master Frugal try some new things too if he's been involved in preparing them? x
Boys are definitely easier as far as this is concerned 😉
I was just so shocked when she said it!
My little boy is super fussy too but is starting to get there with his veg. I like the idea of letting them choose tea a couple of nights a week – I might try that.
We definitely have a lot to learn from them don't we? I can't believe an eleven year old is being referred for Anorexia, although actually, I probably can. Skinny people are in all the papers and magazines – children want to be like their idols….
What other snack is there lol.
I think sometimes they think it's cool and grown up to be on adiet so it's the idea of it that they like not the actual 'no chocolate or sweets' bit….
I have to say that this is one of the reasons I am glad to have boys, I would hate to go through this with them. She is beautiful
What a worry at that age, some days I think having boys is a blessing. Jude is a very fussy eater and we have a similar problem as he refuses to eat anything healthy veg wise, but I just perserver and after 3 years its beginning to pay off, he will now eat cucumber, some peas, and carrots, so quite pleased. I always do food as healthily as possible, and friday and satudays are their choice so pizza, hot dogs etc. Tonight it is chicken dippers with potato waffles, but I always put some carrots, or corn or peas on as well, so we compromise with Jude!
Gosh you had me worried for a moment. I hate it when I hear of young kids with eating problems. My friend has 11 year old triplets and one of her girls is about to be referred for anoxeria. How shocking is that. Your little lady sounds nice and sensible – moderation of everything and as for getting you all to eat more healthy teas, wow, we have a lot to learn from our kids. Mich x
Ah bless her, she doesn't need to go on a diet bless her. Mine constantly says she needs to go on a diet and within two minutes is asking whats for dessert or can she have a snack – and by snack she means chocolate!
