I know it’s been a while since I’ve done a Money Makeover post – Real life has been very demanding lately! Anyway, it’s back this week and I thought it would be a good idea to do a quick round up of a few ways that you can make sure that you’re getting what you’re entitled to.
Lots of people are paying too much council tax – the chances are that you’re actually not one of them but if you’re one of the potential 400,000 people who are, you can claim any over payments back as well as reduce your future payments. It’s definitely worth looking into isn’t it?
Make sure you’re not missing out on any financial assistance or benefits that are available to you. Forget about any stigma attached to claiming benefits and use the quick online checker to see if you’re eligible.
Did you know that if you wear a uniform of any kind to work then you can claim a small amount of tax relief each year? It’s an easy process if you want to make a claim and you’ll be able to backdate your claim too so worth it for the cost of a stamp!
Lot’s of companies have great offers and discounts available to offer their customers to help ‘persuade’ them to stay on as a customer so give them a call and see what they can offer you.
If you’re shopping somewhere and they have a store loyalty card – use it and make sure it’s registered. The benefits add up quicker than you might think and you might receive some good discount vouchers in the process. There’s a summary of my favourite loyalty cards here.
If you get chance this week, why don’t you try and save money using at least one of the above ideas.

You have reminded me to sign up for a tesco club card.
Don't forget to claim the tax benefit of any professional subscriptions you may have. These can be quite costly for a lot of professionals and they tend to be an allowable expense for income tax purposes. The cash is better in your pocket than in the hands of HMRC.
Great tips…I am inspired by your blog and hope to one day provide my readers with proven strategies (from our family’s experience) to live a frugal lifestyle.
Good tips, unfortunately we are already getting everything we're entitled to – and it isn't a whole lot!
We bought a house which had been extended greatly. Which meant once it was sold The council could up the band…meaning we had to pay a lot more than we originally thought 🙁
I didn't know about uniforms. Mark wears them at work, so I will have to look into it, thank you
We have had our house reassessed for council tax twice, once before we moved and once in this house. Its worth doing
anna from in the playroom, im accidently logged into the wrong name
Brilliant tips thank you !
We tried to claim the uniform one but it ended up beimg too much hassle!
The Mr’s work cleans all of his overalls thankfully which saves me the hassle but I’ve told friends that they can claim for uniform and saved them a few £ – more people should be made aware 🙂

Some great tips, thank you for sharing! It is often tricky knowing what you are entitled to as there are so many people to contact.
Great tips 🙂 We are just in the process of understanding our rights and benefits for our son and it is so hard and confusing. I liked the benefit calculator you linked to, and the fact that you wrote you should disregard the stigma attached to benefits. You are so right.
Great tips again Cass, thank you so much for sharing. We whizz around being busy and sometimes forget to check that little things can make a difference 🙂
Thanks for sharing some great tips. We all have to make our money stretch that bit further these days, ever little helps x

You've inspired me – I need to get hold of a Co-op loyalty card! We use our local store quite regularly, and they're always asking me if I want one, but I've never bothered up until now….
Great advise on making the most of your money
We all need help in making our money stretch a little further, thanks for some useful tips.
You have reminded me to sign up for a tesco club card. I have started shopping there and everytime i go in, i think that i should be earning points then forget x
A great list of tips. There was a time that I had to claim benefits, and it was something that needed to be done. Checking what you're entitled to is a must when you are on the breadline x
