You all know that I’m a fan of taking my lunch to work for a couple of reasons – the main one being that lunch options where I work are quite limited and anything reasonably priced is a car journey away. I could easily spend £20 a week on lunch if I didn’t take my lunch with me!
Another reason I like to take my own packed lunch with me is because I don’t necessarily make great food choices when I’m hungry and in a hurry. If I’m out and about then I might be tempted by a meal deal which is usually pretty good value – you know the ones I mean where you get a sandwich, a snack like crisps or a chocolate and a drink for a set price, usually around £3 to £3.50.
These meal deals seem like great value for money and other than taking your own lunch with you, they are one of the cheapest meal options you’ll get.
Money isn’t everything though, as this infographic shows us.
Look at the Sainsburys meal deal for example, it costs £3.00 and although they have a great range of sandwiches, snacks and drinks to choose from with some brilliant healthy options, they definitely have some not so healthy choices mixed in. A combination of their cheese and tomato pasta salad, a packet of Walkers crisps and flavoured water (none of which sound particularly laden with calories and fat) comes to a whopping 959 calories with 34.9g of fat and 53.7g sugar! That seems like a huge amount to me, especially when the meal includes a pasta salad and a flavoured water. Sneaky little calories!
Have a look at the infographic and you’ll be surprised at how unhealthy a meal deal can actually be!
Of course, everything is OK in moderation but if seeing how many calories and how much fat and sugar are in these meals deals makes you want to make your own lunch for work then that’s amazing! Save yourself some money and eat healthier at the same time! It’s a win win situation!
