Every week I share five frugal things that I’ve done during the previous week just to show you that the small things you do all add up to a great frugal lifestyle where you can learn to live a fabulously frugal life.
Hey! 👐
First up, I think it’s to stop calling my partner ‘my partner’ in my posts. 😁
I mean, he absolutely is my partner but it just feels weird to call him that as it seems so formal. I’m definitely too old to call him my boyfriend though so I think we need to give him a name that I can call him on here! His name starts with an A so that’s a good start but I wanted something more personal than just A when I write about him!
I spent way longer than I needed to trying to think of a good name to call him and honestly, I have no idea why I overthought it this much. I even Googled words that mean boyfriend to see if I could get a bit creative.
I don’t think he’d appreciate most of the names below though…
After much debate, I’m going to start to call him Big A. 😁
He’s 6ft 4 and I’m 5ft 2 (and a half) so some of our friends call me Little Cass and him Big A and it always makes me smile.
So Big A it is.
Decision made!
1) Our bargain bug has had a glow up on a budget and she is looking good!
I think there’s a whole post waiting to be written about how we gave our bargain bug a makeover on a budget but basically, she is now looking like a brand new car which isn’t bad for a 25 year old car. She looks as good as new, and it cost us barely anything to do as we did the work ourselves so if you take into account that we bought the car for the scrap value, it’s possibly my best pre-loved bargain ever.
2) We went to see the Minecraft movie this week with the kids and saved 40% on our tickets using the Kids Pass app! Thank god we didn’t pay full price as it was quite possibly the worst film I’ve ever seen.
I’ve had the Kids Pass app for about two years now and I have saved quite a bit using it as we’ve used it on cinema trips, days out to the zoo and various theme parks and even meals out – 20% off at the Toby Carvery every time we go for example.
I pay £3.99 a month for it and it does actually pay for itself for us as we eat at the Toby once a month at least, either on our own or with with the kids and we use it for the cinema every couple of months along with various other days out that we’ve enjoyed across the UK since we’ve had it.
It’s definitely only worth it if you will use it but what you could do is sign up for the 30 day free trial offer which will set you back the grand total of one pound.
That’s my referral link if you do decide to sign up. 😁
3) Barbecue season is almost upon us and it’s pretty much my favourite type of tea.
I’ve never been a huge meat-eater but one thing about meat is that there’s no carbs or sugar in it so as a diabetic, I can eat freely (or more freely than usual) which means that I don’t feel like I’m missing out on all the fun.
I just don’t eat any bread with mine but that’s pretty much the only concession that I make when we have a barbecue.
So, in preparation for our many BBQs, I have a drawer in the freezer dedicated to food that we can throw on when we decide to have one – mainly from the reduced section of the supermarket. I buy it when I see it and pop it in the BBQ drawer ready for when we need it.
What you can see above is some chicken breasts that I bought for about £3 for the lot, two expensive steaks that I paid about £4 for and some breaded chicken steaks that were about 90p. The sausages are the only thing that weren’t reduced as I buy high meat content sausages so I can eat themMy garden.
We’d already taken the burgers off and shared them between the kids but they were good quality burgers that only cost a few pounds too. Even the buns were bargains at 10p for four buns and we had three packs stashed away in our freezer.
4) My tomato and strawberry plants are doing well.
I love everything about our home but there’s no denying that the back garden has been lacking a bit of green and without grass or actual mud, I’m limited to pots for my garden green-ness and to me, strawberries and tomatoes feel like a good way to start adding some green to the back garden. I do also have some rocket in there along with one chilli plant and a rogue mini cucumber plant.
5) Last weekend, I decided to go for a walk to my favourite spot in the village so I popped in my headphones, and set off to enjoy the sunshine at the place where I feel most at peace. I took my drinks bottle and some snacks and had a lovely hour soaking in the sun watching the world go by.
I’m learning to take my drinks bottle out with me so I always have a drink with me and it’s probably saved me a fortune as drinks aren’t cheap these days, are they? I make up a bottle of sugar free squash, pop in some ice cubes and my drink is cold for longer than I need it to be as it usually only lasts me a few hours.
I also try and keep one of those teeny bottle of squash in my bag so I can top up with water if there are places to refill and just add some squash to it to drink. I am happy to drink water but I just don’t like it from this bottle for some reason so squash it is.
It helps that it’s such a cute bottle. 😁
