We’ve had some amazing holidays this year as a family – New York, Milan, Isle of Wight and in two weeks, we’re off to Monaco and Nice for a lovely short break. It sounds like we’re total jet-setters but we’re really not – this year’s breaks are a combination of some VERY good deals which I know I’ve told you about and the fact that after being unwell last year I made it my New Year’s Resolution to put any spare money we had into travelling as a family.
This year was the first year we’ve actually travelled anywhere abroad for a good five years or so though, mainly because, as you probably know, travelling abroad with children isn’t always the relaxing break you want it to be. It just didn’t seem worth the hassle and cost of travelling abroad when there’s so much to see and do here in the UK.
I’ve been thinking about sharing some of the great areas here in the UK with you for a while now so I think I’m going to do a bit of a mini series highlighting some of the great places you can visit here in this beautiful country.
We’ll kick of today with Suffolk which is a great place to start if you want to explore the UK a bit more for your next family holiday….
If adventure is your thing then you can get your fill of it in the treetops at Go Ape in Thetford Forest, on the go karts at one of the many tracks you’ll find in Suffolk or if you really want to get your heart pumping you could head to the Pleasurewood Hills theme park and try out some of the thrill rides there.
If historical sites and places of interest are more your thing then you’ll definitely find something you’ll enjoy in Suffolk. As we have an English Heritage membership then I tend to look at their sites when it comes to planning days out in the UK and Suffolk and there are some sites that are definitely on my must visit list. Bury St Edmunds Abbey and Framlingham Castle look like great days out that we would enjoy.
We love a good family day out and Suffolk has some that I know we’ll love. The arcades at Southwold Pier sounds like somewhere we’d enjoy as would Jimmy’s Farm and Africa Alive! which is the only zoo in Suffolk. We also love a good beach and Suffolk has some great ones by the looks of it although the one I want to visit is more for the photo opp than the beach itself – Thorpeness Beach looks picture perfect and I’d be in camera heaven!
Yes, I said shopping, much to Mr and Master Frugal’s disgust. Miss Frugal and I love a good shopping trip on holiday and always scout out somewhere to go for the day where we can shop and the boys can do something else like go to the pictures or go bowling. The Buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich looks like it could be just the sort of place we like as it has a cinema attached to it and lots of shops we love.
Sport and Leisure
There’s plenty of cycling and walking trails in Suffolk but we wouldn’t generally do either on holiday – you’re more likely to find us at one of the equestrian centres (well me in the cafe watching everyone else ride) or at one of the two trampoline parks. The kids have also mentioned that they’d like to learn some sailing skills and even though we live by a beach and a river, there’s not much around here where they can do that so the sailing and watersports clubs along the coastline would be high on our list of things to do.
These are just a few of the things that I’ve discovered that I think we’d enjoy on a trip to Suffolk. I’d also be looking for some great accommodation where we could relax as a family. We need space more than anything else as I learned when we went to Milan that a family hotel room is no longer for us as being on top of each other 24 hours a day does not make for happy frugals. I’m in love with some of the properties on this site and could quite happily stay in any one of them.
Have you visited Suffolk, what am I missing from my must-do holiday list?
