Today Miss Frugal is going to get her ears pierced. Possibly.
I’m happy for her to get them done, after all, I had mine done when I was younger than her but we’ve been away the last week and we’d decided that today was going to be the day as I want her to have had them in for as long as possible before she goes back to school in September.
But she’s woken up today and can’t decide if she really does want them doing, so we’ll have to see what happens.
One person who very definitely does want pierced ears (or rather ear to be more precise) is Master Frugal who is desperate to have his ear done. Partly because a few of his friends have it done and partly because he thinks it looks cool and just wants it doing.
He’s eight, so I don’t have a particular problem with the age side of things and I know that he would be OK with getting it done and looking after it afterwards (or at least letting me look after it for him).
What I really don’t like the idea of is that he’s a boy and I really don’t want him to get it done. But I’m sure I wouldn’t have had an issue if it was Miss Frugal who had asked me when she eight.
Is that sexist and if it is, is it at least for the right reasons?
How do you feel about boys getting the ears pierced – would you let your eight year old get his done or would you put your foot down?

Hi gosh I thought this was an 80s trend so thanks for the warning. My eldest is only 3 so we haven’t got this far yet! I don’t like ear piercing on boys but I would let them get it. After all it will close and leaves a minimal scar but I would feel like I had mini thugs in the house!
Eeek I'd be the same as you. No reason for me to object really, and I know my child, but I also don't really like it on a boy. Can't explain why, which is wrong I know. I just don't like it. Probably the stereotype of the gangsta rapper. I'm such an old…
I have two boys and I wouldn't let either of them have a pierced ear. My eldest is also eight. I think he's far too young to take a decision like that. I think girls are too, but peer pressure is stronger and I would hold out (if poss) to about 16 – or ever if I could!
My mum wouldnt let me have my ears pierced until I left home – I left it till I was 22in the end and then let them heal over a year later. You'd imagine I would therefore be a bit keen on Ear piercing as a result of that but It hasnt worked out that way oddly enough. I have set an age limit in my mind of 14,not that Kitty has asked yet. She has mentioned that a few classmates have earrings though.Tricky one, whatever works for everyone and their families !
Also not a fan of boys with earrings, but I personally find it nice on boys than men 😉
I'm not keen on boys with their ears pierced, bit of a throwback to the late 80s/early 90s for me! But then I don't like very young girls and babies with their ears pierced either so I'm not the best person to comment I guess. But at least if he gets them done and he doesn't like them when he's older he can just let them close up
I was happy for my kids to do what ever they liked to their bodies when they earned the money to pay for it. By then, it was their choices.
