We've started doing this just this month! It's quite alarming how much extra I am spending by doing "top up" shops, whilst casually browsing the clothing section for my girls. An eye opener for sure!

This sounds like something I NEED to do, especially this month, my money has vanished and still have about 10 days until pay day (eek), this time of year is always hard for us I find as we spend more due to it being all of our Birthday's/Christmas, I seem to find the food shopping bill goes up too! Last night we got to the till and were genuinely shocked at how much it cost us admittedly there was more 'junk' than usually as some of it was party food, but it certainly didn't look as much as it cost! So I think me and my partner need to sit down and sort it all out, every year I say I must put at least £10 a month behind for this time of year as every year I always run out of money just before my son's birthday because of all the extras. Plus it will give me a good excuse to get the notepad and pen out!

A diary is the only way and sometimes it shocks you. My other half always claims he spends nothing, but if we added up all the cokes and crisps and newspapers over the course of a month I bet he'd be shocked

Oooh that will be fun. I don't carry cash so I'm never tempted to just spend a couple of pounds in a shop as I know that what I do spend will be shown on my statement which the OH and I go through every week online! I think though that a spending diary is a brilliant idea to help people keep on top of what they are actually spending as opposed to what they think!
