Life can be hectic, and finding quality time together isn’t always easy. That’s why planning a simple date night at home can make such a difference. With a little creativity, you can enjoy something fun and memorable without spending much at all – and it’s a great alternative to another night of TV. 😁

And you know what, you don’t even need to call it ‘date night’ if that’s a bit cheesy for you! This is just a list of ideas for things you can do together as a couple…
Cook a Meal Together
Pick a recipe you’ve both wanted to try and cook it together. It could be homemade pizza, a curry, or even a dessert. The fun is in working as a team, and you get to enjoy the delicious results afterwards. I do this a few times a week without the ‘date night’ label just by adding in a meal to our meal planner that we can cook together on a night when I know we have no other commitments.
Movie Marathon
Choose a theme, whether it’s rom-coms, thrillers, or nostalgic favourites, and settle in with blankets, snacks, and hot drinks. You could even make it a series, continuing the theme on your next date night. This is another one that we do without thinking about it as I’m not a huge TV watcher and there are so many ‘must see’ films that I have never seen and we’re gradually working our way through some of them.

Board Games or Card Games
A little friendly competition can be a great way to laugh and connect. Dig out your old board games or a deck of cards for a night of fun. If you don’t have any, there are plenty of free printable games online. Another thing that we do, which I appreciate most wouldn’t, is play darts. We actually have a dart board up in our dining room as we enjoy playing it and the kids and their partners often come around to play too.
Indoor Picnic
Lay out a blanket, make some simple finger foods, and enjoy a picnic right in your living room. Add fairy lights or candles to set the mood if you fancy a full on romantic date night. 😁 I’ll be honest here though and say that we are more likely to have a picky tea set up on a camping table in our living room while we catch up on our days.
Plan Your Next Adventure
Spend an evening dreaming and planning your next trip, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a bigger holiday. Research places together, make a wish list, and get excited for what’s to come. I love doing this although at the moment it’s more about planning for our new house and what we’ll do to it when we move in as that’s definitely our next life adventure.

DIY Spa Night
Not one for us but this is an ideal date night if you like that sort of thing… Run a bubble bath, light candles, play some relaxing music, and take turns giving each other a simple hand or shoulder massage. It’s a lovely way to relax together without booking an expensive spa.
Bake Something Sweet
Pick a simple recipe like cookies, brownies, or cupcakes, and bake together. Not only do you get a tasty treat at the end, but it’s a fun way to spend the evening and helps you save a bit of money on snacks over the next couple of days.
Watch a Comedy Special
Laughter really is one of the best ways to bond. Find a stand-up comedy special or funny film and enjoy a night of giggles together – we actually have loads of comedy DVDs between us so we spent some great nights watching them together.
Stargazing from Indoors
If you have a clear window or feeling brave enough to go sit in the garden, wrap up warm, make some hot chocolate, and spend some time looking at the stars. There are free apps that can help identify constellations so you know what you’re looking at.
Music & Memories Night
Take turns playing your favourite songs, or music that brings back special memories. It’s a great way to share stories and get to know each other even better and I loved the time we did this together. We actually made an Amazon playlist of our favourite songs so we could listen to them when we were in the car and it’s the most random playlist you have ever heard but we really enjoy listening to it.
Cold weather doesn’t have to mean dull or expensive evenings. With a few simple touches, staying in can be even more romantic and memorable than going out.
Cosy up, get creative, and enjoy your time together without breaking the budget. 😀
