{Updated for 2017} I know in some houses, leftover chocolate is about as unusual as leftover wine is in this house but we always have lots of chocolate left over after every Christmas and Easter.Even though we only bought the kids one egg each this year, they still seem to have accumulated a few extra from grandparents, friends and the various clubs they go to but I know they won't eat them all as they're not big chocolate eaters usually. I don't like to see anything go to waste so I've been looking through my old posts for ideas for using it up. Biscuits Our super easy biscuit recipe … [Read more...]

Homemade Jelly….
Have you ever tried making your own jelly? I'd never even thought about it really because jelly isn't exactly expensive and there's so many flavours to choose from so it seemed like a bit of a waste of time and energy making it. But when we were away in Wales last week, we saw some rather posh people being served a rather lovely looking afternoon tea which included some sort of clear jelly with fruit floating in it so we decided to have a go ourselves and yesterday we made Lemonade Jelly and Ginger Ale and Lime Jelly. It's ridiculously easy to make and the resulting … [Read more...]
My favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon – Movies and homemade popcorn….
I love Sunday afternoons lazing on the settee with a bowl of homemade popcorn watching a film with the kids - even more so now that they're a little bit older and want to watch films that I actually have a chance of enjoying with them!Homemade popcorn tastes much nicer than the shop bought bags of it and you don't need anything special to make it with other than a pan with a lid. I did consider buying a popcorn maker at one point as they're not overly expensive and I imagine that they make the process even easier but to be fair, it's not difficult anyway so there's no point going out … [Read more...]
Cooking with kids: Easy Rainbow Layer Cake….
First of all, I apologise for the lack of photos of the making of this cake - Miss Frugal and I made this last Friday night for Master Frugal's birthday and we had absolutely no faith that it was going to be anything worth blogging about so we didn't take the usual million and one photos of every stage of the process ;-)It did work though (if you ignore the leaning tower of Pisa effect) so I thought I'd share it with you anyway, however, I will say up front that this isn't a particularly frugal cake to make as it involves large quantities of the ingredients and the different food … [Read more...]
Thrifty Thursday – Leftover pies and alternative pie toppings….
Who doesn't love a good pie?I've always been put off making pies because (a) I worry about a soggy bottom and (b) I always thought pastry was difficult to master. The soggy bottom thing is probably a fear of Mary Berry jumping out from my kitchen cupboard to examine my pie (impossible I know, not least because there's no space for her by the time I've squeezed every kitchen gadget known to man in there). The difficulty thing I definitely get from my Mam who I always used to think could make great pastry until one day she told me that most of the time she actually used ready … [Read more...]
