The costs can also mount up pretty quickly if you not prepared so today, I’m going to share with you how I plan an organised family holiday which is going to be relaxing and not bankrupt us! 😉
Honestly, travelling with your entire family can be an amazing experience if you do it right and you can make memories that will genuinely last a lifetime. I have some wonderful memories from my own childhood family holidays and that’s what I want for my own children.
Here are my tips to have a frugal but still fun holiday with the kids….
Say no to overpacking
My children, Miss Frugal especially, have a real tendency to overpack! We’re away next week and she’s already sorted out her swimsuits – there are seven waiting to be packed which is way more than she needs so we’re going to have a swimsuit cull before we pack.
I’d strongly recommend working out what outfits you’ll be wearing and what you can mix and match to prevent taking more than you need.
Let’s face it, no-one wants to pay excess baggage.
Vacation rentals over hotels
Villas and holiday home rentals are much more comfortable over hotels when you’re travelling with your family. First of all, you will know for sure that your kids are safe, and they can wander around the whole place without getting lost or being unsupervised.
Moreover, vacation rentals are entire houses or apartments that include a kitchen too. You can save the money from eating at expensive restaurants by cooking quick meals at your vacation rental. Plus, it may be cheaper to rent one of these rather than two hotel rooms or a suite for you and your children.
Flights, airport time and check-ins
Pay attention to the flight tickets. Depending on your children’s age, you might be able to pay less or not pay at all for their seats. See what company offers the best prices for family holidays and choose the one that suits your needs the best. Research is paramount when choosing a flight. Also, set ground rules for your children when being in the airport and at the check-in gates.
Visas and documents
Some countries require visas while others don’t. At the same time, some countries offer the possibility to apply for a visa online. For instance, the system for obtaining a Switzerland visa appointment in London online is much more convenient compared to the systems that involve a lot of paperwork. Again, research is needed for this step.
