I bet most of you have a tub of Bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda) in your cupboard right now and I’d also hazard a guess that if we all went and checked the use by date on it, at least half of them would be out of date.
There’s a good reason for that – most people don’t realise just how versatile bicarbonate of soda actually is so they buy a jar for baking and it sits in the cupboard for months on end, only being brought out when a recipe calls for a pinch of it.
But there are so many other uses for it, so why not have a look at the list below and see what else you can do with bicarbonate of soda….
- Dip your toothbrush and toothpaste into Bicarbonate of soda for an extra whitening boost when you’re brushing your teeth. This also helps to neutralise any bad breath rather than just mask it as toothpaste might do.
- Soak stale smelling sponges and cloths in a solution made up of 5 tablespoons of Bicarbonate of soda dissolved into a pint of warm water.
- Pop an open half filled tub of Bicarbonate of soda in the back of your fridge to neutralise any unpleasant fridge odours. Replace every six weeks or so.
- When hoovering your car out sprinkle Bicarbonate of soda on the upholstery and leave for 15 minutes before hoovering it up to freshen it up.
- Oil and grease stains have more chance of washing out if you add some Bicarbonate of soda to your wash.
- To clean burnt pans, add enough hot water to cover the burnt area and then stir in a couple of tablespoons of Bicarbonate of soda and leave to soak for half an hour. If it’s really burnt on, layer the bottom of the pan with a thick layer of Bicarbonate of soda and add just enough water to make a thick paste, leave overnight and you should be able to clean the pan in the morning.
- Soak your shower curtain in a mix of Bicarbonate of soda and warm water to clean them.
- Sprinkle a little Bicarbonate of soda in your trainers to neutralize that awful smelly feet smell.
- A paste made with lemon juice and Bicarbonate of soda will clean the stubbornest of stains – look at the patch on my oven door that I cleaned using this:
- And finally, you can have the most fun possible with Bicarbonate of soda by making a rocket!

Home wasn't a set house, or a single town on a map. It was wherever the people who loved you were, whenever you were together. Not a place, but a moment, and then another, building on each other like bricks to create a solid shelter that you take with you for your entire life, wherever you may go.

as a dental nurse you really should NOT use bicarbonate of soda on your teeth and gums as this is an abrasive and is extremely harmful to the structure of your teeth removing the enamel making your teeth softer, sensitive and discoloured over time and creating notches near the root of teeth whilst abrasives help to remove tooth stain for now they will also contribute to tooth wear.
Another helpful post 🙂
People should try to stay away from chemical based products for cleaning everything in their house.
Vinegar and Bicarbonate soda should be the primary cleaning products :).
I didn't know most of this….I might try it in my trainers. They stink. lol x
Hi –
I have heard (but never tried) that dry tea bags (either new or used), placed in sneakers overnt removes odors. Also. I used to have HORRENDOUS foot & body odor, which never went away until after I joined Weight Watchers and started eating 5 servings of vegetables a day. Apparently only eating 1 or 2 servings of vegs (max) while growing up was NOT enough for proper nutrition. I never realized until then that poor nutrition (at least for ME) was the cause of my foot/body odor…
Of course, my niece eats plenty of vegs, but, she has digestive issues which unfortunately has an effect on how her body assimilates vitamins & minerals from her food.
I use baking soda as tooth paste once a week to whiten my teeth. It seems that this habit has whiten my teeth, making it brighter and shiner.
It can also be used as a deodorant! Either use it like talc and dust it on or form a paste with coconut oil and essential oil to make a cream that you can rub in.
