I think about 90% of my brain is pretty much focused on moving house all of the time right now.
It’s a mix of excitement, anxiety, thinking about all the things that need doing along with lots of stress and fear that it will all fall through.
I thought I might as well use the fact that my brain is in house move mode by sharing a few posts about moving house that might actually save someone some money, time or stress! And I’m starting today with a few ways that you can save money when moving house.

Moving house is exciting, but it can also be one of the most expensive times in family life. From removal vans to new furniture, the costs add up quickly. The good news is that with a little planning, you can cut costs and make your move much more affordable.
Here’s 10 simple ways to save money when moving house.
1. Declutter Before You Pack
The less you have to move, the cheaper and easier it will be. Sell unwanted items online, take them to a car boot sale, or donate them to charity shops. You’ll raise a bit of cash and save on moving costs at the same time.
I’ve sold a few things on Vinted and Marketplace since we put our house up for sale and made a few pounds which I put into our moving house fund.
2. Collect Free Packing Materials 📦
Instead of buying boxes, ask at supermarkets, DIY stores, or look on local community groups where people often give them away for free. Use towels, bedding, and clothes to wrap fragile items instead of paying for bubble wrap.
I also have a friend who just moved house and before she moved, I asked her if she could keep her boxes for me which means I had a fair few boxes from her too. I did buy some from Amazon the day we accepted our offer but I think we can blame that on excitement and enthusiasm.
3. Compare Removal Options 🚚
Get quotes from several companies and consider whether you actually need a full removal service. For smaller moves, hiring a van and doing it yourself (with help from friends or family) can be much cheaper. We’ve decided to do it ourselves which makes me more than a little nervous!
4. Move Midweek if Possible
Removal companies and van hire are often more expensive at weekends and at the end of the month. Apparently, if you can move on a quieter day, you’ll pay less.
5. Use Up What You Have
Before you move, plan meals around the food already in your freezer and cupboards. It saves money on shopping and means you don’t have to transport as much food.
6. Shop Around for Utilities 💡
Don’t just stick with the default providers at your new home. Compare energy, broadband, and insurance deals as soon as you move in or even before – trust me, I’ve already started. Switching could save you hundreds over the year.
7. Borrow Before You Buy
Need tools for DIY jobs or a ladder for unpacking? Ask friends, family, or neighbours before rushing out to buy. You may only need them once or twice.
8. Budget for the First Food Shop 🛒
The first shop in a new house can be pricey if you need to replace basics like condiments, spices, or cleaning products. Set a budget in advance and look out for supermarket offers or own-brand alternatives.
9. Keep a Moving Day Bag 🎒
Pack a bag with snacks, drinks, toiletries, and a change of clothes. This avoids unnecessary spending on takeaways or emergency shop trips when you’re too tired to unpack.
10. Take Meter Readings
When you move in and out, take photos of all gas, electricity, and water meters. This prevents you from being overcharged and ensures you only pay for what you use.
Moving house doesn’t have to break the bank (that’s what I’m telling myself anyway). With a bit of preparation and smart choices, you can keep costs under control and focus on settling into your new home. 😀
