Autumn is such a lovely season for family adventures. Crisp leaves, cosy jumpers, and plenty of free or low-cost things to do — perfect if you’re watching the pennies.
Here’s a few ideas of things we’ve done over the years to have fun in the Autumn. Most of them are free but even the ones that do cost, won’t set you back more than £10 for the day if you’re organised.

1. Leaf Collecting & Nature Walk 🍁
Head to a local park or woodland and challenge the kids to collect the biggest, brightest, or crunchiest leaves. Bring them home for crafts like leaf rubbings or an autumn collage.

A nice muddle walk today to see in the new year! #nature #leaves #wellies #epig #kbnmoms #momsoninstagram
2. Conker Hunting 🌰
Find a horse chestnut tree and see who can gather the most conkers. Later, have a family conker battle (don’t forget to pierce and thread the string through carefully!).
3. Autumn Picnic in the Park 🧺
Pack up a flask of hot chocolate, sandwiches, and a blanket. Enjoy the crisp autumn air, kick through the leaves, and maybe bring along a ball or frisbee for games.
4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch 🎃
Many local farms let you wander the fields for free — you just pay for any pumpkins you pick. Even one or two small pumpkins won’t break the bank, and it’s great fun for kids. And when you get home, have even more fun carving them ready for Halloween.

5. Local Museum or Heritage Site 🏛
As the weather cools, indoor days are perfect. Many museums are free or ask for a small donation, so you can spend a whole afternoon exploring for next to nothing.
6. Bonfire Night or Fireworks Display 🎆
Check your local community events — some run free or very low-cost displays in early November. Wrap up warm and take your own flask and snacks to save money.
7. Woodland Adventure Trail 🌲
Take the kids on a scavenger hunt in your nearest woodland. Spot mushrooms, pinecones, and animal tracks. Parking is often free or just a couple of pounds so make up a flask, pack some snacks and go enjoy some Autumn sunshine.
8. Apple or Berry Picking 🍏
Some orchards and farms let you pick your own fruit at low prices or you could just find some growing wild that you might be able to pick. We have them in a little woodland near us that you’re allowed to pick – I found out about it on a local Facebook group.

And if you pick blackberries then you could make some amazing blackberry infused vinegar.
9. Autumn Craft Afternoon 🍂✂️
Gather conkers, leaves, and pinecones, then head home for a craft session. From leaf crowns to pinecone animals, the kids will love getting creative.
10. Family Film Night at Home 🎬
Choose a cosy autumn film, make hot chocolate, and serve homemade popcorn. Give everyone a “ticket” to enter for a proper cinema feel — all for just a few pounds.

Autumn is full of free and low-cost activities that make the most of the season. Whether it’s hunting conkers, visiting a pumpkin patch, or simply crunching through the leaves together, you can have magical days out for under £10.
