Camping is one of the best budget-friendly family adventures – fresh air, open space, and no screens in sight. But no matter how carefully you pack, there are always a few essential camping items that are easy to overlook.
Trust me, I know from experience that forgetting any of the essentials can turn a relaxing trip into a stressful one! 😁

We are huge fans of camping and have a great little camping set up which we bought super cheap on Facebook Marketplace and I’ve previously shared some top tips on where to pitch your tent when you’re on a trip but today, it’s all about the essentials that you need to take with you to make sure you have the best time away once you have your setup and you know where the best place to set it up is.

1. Torch or Headlamp (and Spare Batteries)
Once the sun sets, campsites get very dark. A torch or headlamp is vital for late-night toilet runs, cooking after dark, or checking on the tent. And don’t forget to always pack extra batteries so you’re not left in the dark.
We actually have hats with torches in them now too and I probably use them more than any of us as I do need to go for a wee through the night – usually at least once but often twice.
2. First Aid Kit
From insect bites to scraped knees, a camping first aid kit is a must. Ours is stocked with plasters, antiseptic wipes, pain relief, scissors and tweezers. There’s also paracetamol and ibuprofen in there.
It doesn’t take up much space but it’s so worth it if you need it.
3. Bin Bags
Never underestimate the power of a bin bag while camping. They’re perfect for rubbish, muddy clothes, or even as emergency waterproof covers. Always pack more than you think you’ll need.
4. Wet Wipes & Hand Sanitiser
Running water isn’t always nearby so I always take some wet wipes and a few small bottles of hand sanitiser for quick clean-ups, sticky fingers, and freshening up on the go.
5. Matches or a Lighter
A camping lighter or waterproof matches are crucial for stoves, BBQs, or campfires – we’ve had at least one drama where we couldn’t light the fire pit when we were ready to toast our marshmallows so something to light the fire and a sealed bag to keep them dry is top of my packing list as last time I had to borrow some from a neighbouring camper and felt like such an amateur. 😁
6. Camping Mallet & Spare Tent Pegs
Trying to pitch a tent without a mallet is a nightmare, especially on hard ground. Don’t forget spare tent pegs too – they bend and disappear quicker than you’d think. Especially when you get a bit frustrated that they don’t go into the ground easily.
7. Extra Layers & Socks
Even in summer, nights can be surprisingly cold. Keep the family cosy with extra warm socks and layers – a simple way to ensure everyone sleeps well and it’s better to be too warm and have layers to take off!
8. A Washing Line & Pegs
It might sound old-fashioned, but a washing line is a game-changer. From drying swimsuits to soggy socks, it saves space inside the tent and keeps things fresh. We usually head to the lakes for our camping trips and we have a kayak so we definitely need space to dry wetsuits and swimsuits.
9. Portable Power Bank and charger
Phones double up as maps, cameras, and emergency tools. A portable power bank for camping keeps your devices charged when you’re off-grid. We use our car to charge our phones up when we’re out and about during the day.
10. Snacks
Yes, you’ll plan meals, but never underestimate the importance of camping snacks. Granola bars, fruit, and nuts keep hunger at bay on hikes, car rides, or while waiting for the stove to heat.

Packing for a camping trip doesn’t have to be stressful. With these 10 camping must-haves, you’ll have everything covered – leaving you free to enjoy the outdoors, family time, and maybe even a toasted marshmallow or two (as long as you can light the fire pit).
