Shell Fuelsave – How your fuel can save you money….

A few weeks ago, we were invented to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry by Shell to learn about ways to save on your fuel consumption – something we should all be aware of these days with the ever escalating fuel costs.

We were told all about the new Shell Fuelsave fuel works by the lovely Joanne Smith who is one of the Shell scientists.  Apparently the Shell Fuelsave fuel has been five years in the making and she showed us (using actual car parts) how it makes your engine more efficient thus reducing the amount of fuel you use which saves you money.

Shell also invited Quentin Wilson, celeb motoring expert along to tell us what we should and shouldn’t be doing to reduce our fuel costs and we were shown how using the Shell Fuelsave fuel in conjuction with Quentin’s tips could save you 20% on your fuel costs which is a massive amount to us as we spend a lot on fuel in our house.

I’ve written before about ways to save money on petrol so I thought I’d be a bit of an expert and I was looking forward to showing off my knowledge ;-)   But when it came down to it, Quentin told us lots of ways to save that I didn’t know about (and he was lovely too).  Here’s the main things that I learnt:

  • Drive smoothly – Avoid accelerating and braking too hard as aggressive driving can use as much as a third more fuel than smooth driving.
  • Drive in the highest gear you can safely drive in and avoid over revving.
  • Think ahead and anticipate the road.
  • Use cruise control where possible if you have it as this helps maintain a constant speed which will usually improve fuel consumption.
  • Avoid excess idling, an idling engine burns fuel so as a rule if you stop for over 10 seconds, switch off your engine.
  • Avoid high speeds – the faster you go, the higher your fuel consumption.
  • Use your air condition sparingly.
  • Keep the windows closed.
  • Plan trips carefully to avoid rush hour.
  • Avoid carrying excess weight.
  • Take your roof rack off.
  • Remember that not all fuels are the same, a fuel with a fuel economy formula such as Shell Fuelsave can help you reduce your consumption and fuel costs by helping you get the most our of every drop of fuel.

Thanks Shell for a wonderful day ;-)
